A film by Tawfik Sabouni

With: Tawfik Sabouni, Mahmoud Alqadah, Abdelkafi Alhaj, Mohammad Hamki, Abdelhamid Jadoue

After the fall of Assad’s regime, five survivors return to the former torture prison of Saidnaya to reenact what they experienced there during their incarceration. They reclaim their voices and bear witness for those who can no longer speak for themselves.

Our rate : ★★

An important memoir with documentary value. Returning to the very places where torture took place and recounting that torture in a documentary style conveys—much more effectively than Jafar Panahi managed to do with A Simple Accident, which has a similar conceptual approach, evoking memories—the horror of prisons in Syria under Bashar al-Assad and the repression of all dissenting voices. It is also a healing exercise for its author. This is a film that could be shown in history classes for centuries to come.
