As we do every year, and for once a little earlier than usual, we got down to the nitty-gritty of choosing the Top of the Year 2023. Rarely has our top list been so far from unanimous… Basically, while our reviewers share the same passion, they each have their own area of expertise, which necessarily influences their taste. We also give each reviewer carte blanche to come up with his or her own Top X, whether it’s a Top 10 for the most diligent, a Top 7 for the least enthusiastic among us about the past cinephile year, or a Top 31 to make sure we don’t forget anyone from our president, even if he too considers the year to have been rather weak in the end. Another factor that introduces an important bias into this ranking, which usually encourages us to wait a little longer before publishing it – but well, this year we thought we’d publish at Christmas – is the fact that not all our reviewers were able to see all the same films. Some of us think that Désordres might have won without it, but this year, our winning film will be Les feuilles mortes (Dead Leaves), although none of us put it at the top of our list, Kaurismaki obviously acting as a link between our different universes …
